Leading Greats #70

What about Post-Traumatic Growth: PTG ?

We commonly hear about Post Traumatic Stress.

What if we flip the script to Post Traumatic Growth?

Let's do this.

It's easy to find challenges and reasons to stop, quit, or change directions in career and life pursuits.

Many of these feelings come from post-traumatic processing of stressful events:

  • Careers falter

  • Relationships cool

  • Living can be hard

  • Downsizing happens

  • AI seems like too much - it threatens and replaces some jobs.

Life isn't always fair, yet it's in our best interest to cut our losses and pick back up to equal or greater productivity and satisfaction where we can as soon as we are able to.

If you have followed me for a while, you understand that I have broad interests and vast experiences, and I read, listen, and explore widely.

Part of the foundation of this newsletter is the incredible number of experiences I have had in all aspects of life that have shaped me.

Some were horrific, many exhilarating, and a number were beyond my wildest hopes and expectations.

Over time, I will find a way to share bits of many of these to bring benefit and add value.

Today, I will cover key points of Post-Traumatic Growth here.

25 points of interest around Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG):

  1. Definition:

Post-traumatic growth (PTG) refers to positive psychological change experienced as a result of struggling with highly challenging life circumstances and trauma.

  2. Origins:

The term PTG was coined by psychologists Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun in the mid-1990s.

  3. Core Domains:

PTG typically encompasses five main domains: appreciation of life, relationships with others, new possibilities in life, personal strength, and spiritual change.

  4. Difference from Resilience:

Unlike resilience, which is about bouncing back to a prior state, PTG involves a transformation that leads to a higher level of functioning than before the trauma.

  5. Appreciation of Life:

Many individuals report a renewed appreciation for life and a shift in priorities post-trauma.

  6. Improved Relationships:

Traumatic experiences often lead to deeper relationships and increased empathy and compassion for others.

  7. New Possibilities:

People experiencing PTG may discover new paths, opportunities, or interests they had not considered before the trauma.

  8. Personal Strength:

Survivors often find an inner strength and capability they were previously unaware of.

  9. Spiritual Change:

Many individuals report experiencing a significant spiritual transformation, whether through religious faith or a more general sense of meaning and connection.

  10. Narrative Development:

The process of making sense of the trauma and integrating it into one's life story is crucial for PTG.

  11. Benefit Finding:

Actively searching for benefits or positive aspects in the aftermath of trauma can facilitate PTG.

  12. Social Support:

Strong social networks and supportive relationships are critical factors in fostering PTG.

  13. Mindfulness and Acceptance:

Practices like mindfulness and acceptance can help individuals process their trauma and foster growth.

  14. Optimism:

An optimistic outlook, or the ability to maintain hope and see the potential for positive outcomes, is associated with higher PTG.

  15. Self-Disclosure:

Sharing one's traumatic experiences and growth with others can reinforce the gains and foster further development.

  16. Coping Strategies:

Adaptive coping strategies, such as problem-solving and seeking social support, are linked to PTG.

  17. Cognitive Processing:

The way individuals process and think about their trauma, including reframing and finding meaning, impacts PTG.

  18. Role of Therapists:

Mental health professionals can play a crucial role in facilitating PTG by providing supportive environments and guiding individuals through the process.

  19. Assessment Tools:

The Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) is a widely used tool for measuring PTG.

  20. Cultural Factors:

Cultural background and societal context can influence the experience and expression of PTG.

  21. Gender Differences:

Research suggests there may be gender differences in PTG, with women often reporting higher levels of growth than men.

  22. Health Benefits:

PTG has been associated with various health benefits, including lower levels of depression and anxiety and better overall well-being.

  23. Neuroscience of PTG:

Studies indicate that PTG might involve neuroplastic changes in the brain, particularly in areas related to emotion regulation and cognitive processing.

  24. Resilience Training:

Programs aimed at building resilience can also promote PTG by providing individuals with the tools to cope with and grow from trauma.

  25. Future Directions:

Ongoing research aims to better understand the mechanisms behind PTG and how to promote it effectively in different populations.

The above points were gathered over time in life experiences, plus reading, listening, and encountering inspirational role models.
