Leading Greats #51

Leader vs. Manager | Personal Greats | Leading Self & Others

Do you Lead, Manage, mix in Both?

It's key to know the difference because:

Your team aims to reach the peak of success.
You want to get there together.

Setting Your Ladder Against the Right Wall?

Lean into the Leadership vs. Management Challenge

Think of it this way, as Stephen Covey said:

A manager helps the team climb fast.
A leader checks if the ladder's against the right wall.

Leadership and management mix but are not the same.
Knowing how they differ helps you get better at both.

Together we win bigger.

This simplified example captures the essence of “Manager vs. Leader”

  1. Managers organize stuff.

They make plans, set rules, and make sure everyone follows them.

  2. Leaders inspire people.

They show the way with big dreams and encourage everyone to join in.

  3. Managers check the clock.

They focus on when things happen and keeping things on time.

  4. Leaders check the compass.

They care more about the right direction than how fast we get there.

  5. Managers give instructions.

They tell you what to do step by step.

  6. Leaders give reasons.

They help you understand why we’re doing something.

  7. Managers solve problems.

When things go wrong, they fix them.

  8. Leaders see opportunities.

They turn problems into chances to do something great.

  9. Managers like control.

They keep everything under their watch.

  10. Leaders like trust.

They believe in you to do your best.

  11. Managers talk.

They give orders and expect them to be followed.

  12. Leaders listen.

They want to hear your ideas and dreams.

  13. Managers have employees.

People work for them because they have to.

  14. Leaders have followers.

People join them because they believe in the same dream.

  15. Let's be leaders!

We'll dream big, listen well, and go far together.

On the Personal Side

I rarely share much about myself as my work is about work.

And that is how we got here together, most likely.

AGAIN - Thank You ALL - for your interest and continued support!

This work is FREE. I do it out of interest in giving back and sharing a message.

Sometimes, it is shocking how much time goes into free work!

I committed. It will soon be ONE Year of Leading Greats!

So far, I have never missed a weekly issue!

A few big things recently took place on my end.

I mention this as constraints came along.

I MOVED! It did not go as planned.

You know what is said about having plans! [God laughs]

Plus, unforeseen things over trust in delegation of a few projects happened.

Some things went amazingly well.

Yet some dented the quality of what I ideally wanted to share publicly.

I would like your patience as I aim for quality.

Many gears have been shifting in the background.

This is why I mentioned the recent move(s—yes, there was more than one!).

Now I live in Southern California after over a decade in Northern CA.

I am looking forward to settling in!

Thank you for your consideration!!
