Leading Greats #42

Resistance + Recognize & Avoid It | Attitudes & Behaviors | Revision to #41 | Leading Greatly

Resistance is At The Forefront in 2024

That is what I am hearing from clients and colleagues.

That prompted the focus of Leading Greats issue #42.

7 Steps to Recognize and Avoid Resistance for Peak Performance

1.     Self-Reflection: Regularly assess your own attitudes and behaviors.

Be honest with yourself about areas where you might be resisting change or improvement.

This step involves acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses.

2.     Goal Setting: Clearly define your professional goals.

Understanding what you are working towards can help you identify areas where resistance might be holding you back.

3.     Seek Feedback: Don’t hesitate to ask for feedback from colleagues, mentors, supervisors, and coaches.

Sometimes, others can see resistance in us that we might not be aware of.

4.     Develop a Growth Mindset: Embrace challenges and view them as opportunities to grow rather than obstacles.

A growth mindset helps in overcoming resistance to change and learning new skills.

5.     Time Management: Prioritize your tasks and manage your time effectively.

Resistance often manifests as procrastination or mismanagement of time.

6.     Emotional Intelligence: Work on understanding and managing your emotions.

Emotional intelligence can help you navigate through feelings of fear or discomfort that often accompany resistance.

7.     Continuous Learning: Commit to lifelong learning.

Whether it’s new industry trends, technologies, or skill sets, staying updated and adaptable helps overcome resistance to change.

The following are just two examples of well-known leaders who have effectively used similar steps to Address Resistance and Achieve Peak Performance:

1. Indra Nooyi, Former CEO of PepsiCo:

  • Self-Reflection & Continuous Learning: Nooyi was known for her forward-thinking and reflective leadership.

  • She often spoke about the importance of self-improvement and lifelong learning.

  • Feedback & Emotional Intelligence: Nooyi was an advocate of receiving feedback and adapting to it, a trait that demands high emotional intelligence.

  • Growth Mindset: Nooyi’s leadership at PepsiCo was marked by her willingness to adapt and grow, particularly evident in her push towards healthier product lines in response to changing market trends.Indra Nooyi famously said:

2. Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft:

  • Growth Mindset & Continuous Learning: Nadella's tenure at Microsoft has been characterized by a significant shift in company culture towards a growth mindset.

  • He often emphasizes the importance of learning and adapting.

  • Goal Setting & Time Management: Under Nadella’s leadership, Microsoft has shown a clear focus on specific goals, like cloud computing and AI technology, demonstrating effective prioritization and time management.

  • Self-Reflection & Emotional Intelligence: Nadella encourages his team to reflect on their failures and learn from them, highlighting the importance of emotional intelligence in a professional setting.

Satya Nadella is quoted as saying:

"Don’t be a know-it-all; be a learn-it-all."
