Leading Greats #38

What Makes a Good Life | What You Can Control | Destination | Leading Greatly

What Does Make a Good Life?

Perhaps you are aware of The Harvard Study of Adult Development.

This is the longest running scientific study of happiness ever conducted.

The study covers two generations and is still going strong for more than 80 years.

And what did it take to get such a vast study underway and to continue successfully?

Tremendous TRUST!

There was a deep commitment from the study team to keep the confidentiality of participants.

“Happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle. Some things are within your control. And some things are not.”

– Epictetus

Good relationships keep us healthier and happier.

There are other important lengthy studies of the human condition out there, though not as lengthy as The Harvard study of Adult Development.

The theme is resounding in all these studies:

the importance of human connection in our lives.

This goes well above having money.

“There is a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”

– Leonard Cohen

Just over a decade ago Angus Deaton and Daniel Kahneman at Princeton University tried to quantify the relationship of money to happiness.

At that time, they found that around $75,000 annual income per household in the United States was the right number for happiness.

Their studies concluded that “more money does not necessarily buy more happiness, but less money is associated with emotional pain.”

“A sad soul can kill you quicker than, far quicker, than a germ.”

– John Steinbeck

How do you reach the good life?

  • The good life is not a destination, but the path.

With all the decisions and choices on a moment-by-moment basis that you face, you get to choose where your attention goes.

Strengthen relationships.

Good relationships keep us healthy and happy.

“Judge each day not by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant.”

- William Arthur Ward

Inspiration for these topics in Leading Greats issue #38 came from the book:

The Good Life, by Robert Waldinger, MD and Marc Schulz, PhD.

They both are leaders with The Harvard Study of Adult Development.

I really enjoyed reading this book, I highly recommend it.
