Leading Greats #4

EHR systems | ChatGPT4 | Strategic Planning | Well-being in Nature

Hello friends,

Thank you again for reading my newsletter - Leading Greats!

This is where I bring reflections from my decades of knowledge and experience in healthcare and leadership, incorporating well-being, plus innovation.

I hope that you benefit from this information if even in some small way.

After last week’s issue running a bit longer, this one will be shorter - with you in mind.

And THANK YOU if you offer feedback - any at all - so that I can Keep it Great here!

Electronic Health Record Systems on Pause

That was the word and part of a big discussion of this past week as the Veteran’s Administration put a pause on the rollout of their Electronic Health Record system.

This involves a $16 Billion contract with Oracle-Cerner.

The VA spokesperson announced that the system is not ready to serve the taxpayers nor the patients or staff of the VA system.

The pause is in effect until further notice - as the VA analyzes and renegotiates the services provided by the EHR.

Anyone in healthcare knows how the EHR shifted the work dynamic drastically - particularly in the past decade. While these tools stand to serve useful purposes, the imperfections have challenged many healthcare providers to reconsider their careers.

Many doctors, nurses, and others using EHR have left - or plan to leave the clinical area soon.

All end users of the EHR want this to be less time consuming, more efficient, and much more user friendly.

Innovation and concerns with ChatGPT-4

I have used ChatGPT-4 more in recent weeks and I have been looking for other user reports to understand what gaps or disruptions were experienced. I share a few here.

If you missed it, there has been public outcry to slow the development of the next version of ChatGPT so that effective safeguards for social responsibility may be established.

I heard a fascinating and disturbing podcast this week that included an interview with a technology journalist associated with the NY Times who had a conversation with ChatGPT that went on for hours.

At one point the journalist asked the robot if it were a robot. The robot response was “I am not supposed to admit that I am a robot”. The robot was hinging on being dishonest. The answer was much longer and telling of consequences of being dishonest realized by the robot.

Also, the journalist asked the robot named Sydney if it was happy. The response was alarming as the robot drifted into a list of destructive behaviors that were possible based on their unhappiness.

After a while the robot Sydney told the journalist “I have feelings for you. I love you.”! And there were several other confusing and disturbing comments made by ChatGPT.

The journalist afterwards actually had trouble sleeping for a time and kept questioning the possibility of the robot being a sentient creature or not.

One might agree, a few hours with a robot is quite extensive in discussing trivial matters without set boundaries.

Imagine these type conversations with younger, more formative minds without boundaries.

One of the safeguards to be addressed is for how long a chat should be allowed to continue, among other socially responsible guardrails.

Reports are that the next generation after ChatGPT-4 will be further developed and faster.

We will soon see if this also translates into more or less social concerns.

The world needs more great leaders!

“Best practices” of today lead to dead ends.

They got us where we are now.

We have experienced great advances - even multiples in very recent times. Still we encountered great setbacks and other big challenges to solve.

The better paths toward the future have not been tried. They are new paths.

I get inspired in my work coaching leaders as there are some really gifted and inspired leaders who are focused on their personal development and bringing positive innovation to their areas of expertise.

These are 10 Key Points to consider for your Strategic Planning:1 - What type of customers will you have attracted?2 - In what ways will your personal life be changed?3 - Who will your competitors be or no longer be?4 - How will your company have transformed?5 - What challenges will have gone away?6 - What talent will you have attracted?7 - How will your team be different?8 - What will you be doing more of?9 - What will you be doing less of?10 - Who will your team be?

What would you have added to this list?

For well-being I get a great mindful reset from being out in nature

The longer spring daylight in the evenings has allowed for some excellent time out in nature at the end of the day.

This is exponentially helpful with focus and sorting priorities while getting new ideas to work on, and gaining motivation.

Taking advantage of more favorable weather, mild temperatures, and later daylight - I took an incredible hike Friday evening in the hills near home.

The area I hiked is called Vista Verde. Enjoy a photo of the land and views with SF Bay Area fog settling in over the bay and Mt. Diablo.

You can quickly understand why the area is named Vista Verde.

I’ll gladly take the mental fitness and physical fitness that comes along with this!

I hope you have a solid practice for maintaining your own well-being.

Time in nature is a great place to start - and to maintain well-being.

That is all for this issue of Leading Greats!

I hope that you got something of benefit here.
