Leading Greats # 26 = 6 months newsletter Milestone!

Thank you everyone for reading my newsletter and sharing it = Leading Greats!

I celebrate an important milestone with this issue # 26 = 6 months of writing and publishing the free weekly newsletter.

It has been a joy!

And I see some changes on the horizon for Leading Greats.

In this 6th Month Milestone issue, I wanted to focus on Significance and Leadership as they surely relate.

For anyone who has followed me for any amount of time may notice I appreciate the work of Seth Godin.

Seth is an amazing truth teller, and he has a fantastic way of portraying his messages in far reaching blogs and in many small intentional and well received book.

I just read his latest small yet high impact book: The Song of Significance.

I will share some heavy nuggets directly here that I gleaned from The Song of Significance as they align with messages I also offer.

This is about leadership - and it may apply to anyone who leads.

This includes self leadership.

  • Safety first.

  • Humans meet resistance.

  • It takes great work to find effective ways to avoid the accountability to do important work that matters.

  • Significant work requires that we make commitments and keep them.

I will offer a few traps that are encountered for teams who seek to move forward making impact:

  • MAXIMALISMIf it’s not a perfect solution it is a betrayal of everything we stand for.

  • ANTI-LEADERSHIP ATTITUDESBecause industrial managers have harmed workers in the past, we need to avoid all leadership, all management, and the constraints they bring.

  • GLASS HOUSESIf our organization does anything that doesn’t completely fit the humanist model of creation and problem-solving, then we have no business doing anything.

  • THE SMALL WARWe can’t possibly take on big issues in the outside world because right here there are arguments to be settled.

  • UNANCHORED CAREI came for significance and the feelings of possibility, joy, and connection it brings, and that means the organization has to take care of all of my needs.

  • DISPROPORTIONALITYThe minor discomfort the team feels right now is the most important issue to be addressed.

  • SHINY OBJECTSGetting distracted by individual and personal inclinations is more exciting and ultimately more satisfying than the more arduous journey we signed up for in the first place.

The difficult work of leadership can begin with understanding what we each bring to the challenges we’re working on.

The traps are there - whether on or below the surface.

By simply naming the traps out loud may often be enough.

We can name them, acknowledge them, and move forward.

We can get back to the work we came to do.

Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s a willingness to do things that are so important they’re worth doing even when we’re feeling fear.

Vulnerability in conversation is the power of speaking about what you see and believe, even when you’re afraid. This is the opposite of weakness.

The World Needs More Great Leaders!

Remember this:

The purpose of a beehive is NOT to make honey:

honey is the by-product of a healthy hive.

A significant organization can please its customers and make a profit as well.

But it begins with earning enrollment and then doing the work to make change happen.
