Healthcare & Covid: EG.5 rising | Culture of Work | Leadership Styles | Leadership & Book Launch
Hello Friends,
Thank you for reading my newsletter “Leading Greats”!
This is where I bring inspiration from my breadth of knowledge and experience in healthcare and leadership, incorporating well-being, plus new innovations.
I hope that you benefit from this information if even in some small way.
I appreciate your support!! Thank YOU for being GREAT!
It has been another week of interesting conversations and discoveries - as most weeks are!
There are great things to share about Leadership this week.
Thank you for reading!
Covid Cases are On The Rise here in the San Francisco Bay Area
My neighbor has Covid - for the third time.
They are waiting it out at home, for now.
Hospitalizations are up in particular.
Part of this rise is attributed to summer gatherings, and with people trying to avoid the heat while gather indoors together.
Immunity may be waning also as it is near time for a new vaccine in September/October here.
The latest strain of Covid is referred to as Eris or EG.5.
Symptoms of the infection are resembling the flu, and milder symptoms that are treatable.
There is still a healthcare staffing shortage of nurses and physicians. This is slated to get much worse before it gets better.
Keeping well and away from hospitals is a better bet if there is that option.
Work Culture
I am in more and more conversations lately with leaders about their work culture.
“Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” - Peter Drucker
I have been involved in various types of company cultures over my career.
There is the mission and values that the company sets and stands for.
And then there are the people that work for the company - at all levels.
Every individual has their own culture.
Let’s look at what is considered in Workplace Culture.
Workplace or organizational culture encompasses the shared beliefs, values, norms, behaviors, and practices that characterize how work is conducted in a particular organization.
It is the collective mindset and environment that shapes how employees interact with one another, how they approach tasks, and how they align with the company’s mission and goals.
Foundational Components of Workplace Culture:
Values and Mission
Work Ethic
Communication
Leadership Style
Collaboration and Teamwork
Recognition and Rewards
Innovation and Risk Taking
Diversity and Inclusion
Work Life Balance
Learning and Development
Adaptability
Employee Empowerment
Office Environment
Conflict Resolution
Ethical Standards
Safety and well-being
Leadership Styles
Leadership style refers to how leaders interact with their team members, how they make decisions, and how they guide the overall direction of the organization.
For leaders to be effective they often adapt their style based on the situations at hand, the needs of their team, and the goals they are trying to meet.
8 General Leadership Styles:
Autocratic - the leader holds significant control.
Democratic - the leader includes team members in decision making processes.
Laissez-Faire - the leader allows team members to make most decisions themselves.
Transformational - the leader inspires & motivates team members with enthusiasm & shared vision.
Transactional - the leader focuses on setting clear expectations, including rewards & punishment against goals for motivation.
Servant Leader - the leader prioritizes needs and well-being of their team members.
Charismatic - the leader influences and inspires their team through their personal charisma and charm.
Authentic - the leader is genuine, transparent, and true to themselves. They lead my example to build trust through honesty and integrity. This style emphasizes self-awareness and ethical behavior.
The most successful leaders are those who are flexible and can use different styles depending on the matters they are facing.
The World Needs More Great Leaders!
I met Lyndsay Dowd as she was ramping up to launch her first book: Top Down Culture, Revolutionizing Leadership to Drive Results.
Lyndsay is full of energy and as you might imagine, there was plenty excitement about her work around becoming a published author.
Lyndsay is passionate about transforming leadership. She comes from 25+ year sales career, a few decades at IBM.
She also thrives on developing employees to be aware of what they need to do their jobs, and how to do those well.
Lyndsay shared her vulnerability with me. After years of leadership tenure, Lyndsay tried a new company.
She got fired within a few months. Lyndsay had a big wake up call. What works in one company culture does not necessarily work in another.
Lyndsay had so much she wanted to share about her career and leadership so she committed to writing her book. That came to fruition.
Her book is now published and available on Amazon: Top Down Culture, Revolutionizing Leadership to Drive Results:
