Social Awareness & EQ

In final hours approaching this issue, a friend reached out to me from a LinkedIn post I made about Social Awareness - part of Emotional Intelligence.

He offered his contribution to my 11 Strategies for increasing Social Awareness.

See below, David Fessell, MD.

Here are those strategies in brief that I shared:

11 Social Awareness Strategies:

1/ Greet People by Name

·      Jose good to see you

·      You are Rapunzel, right

2/ Watch Body Language

·      A clenched fist

·      A warm smile

3/ Make Timing Everything

·      Head down at a computer screen

·      Relaxed face, eye contact

4/ Develop a Back-pocket Question

·      What is a top focus today

·      By when do you move forward

5/ Don’t Take Notes at Meetings

·      This time is for relationship & trust building

·      Listen actively

6/ Plan Ahead for Social Gatherings

·      Who do you know already

·      What is the intention of the gathering

7/ Clear Away Clutter

·      Don’t get distracted by excess objects

·      Tidy space allows more focus

8/ Live in the Moment

·      You may not find yourself in this exact situation again

·      Savor the uniqueness of the occasion

9/ Practice the Art of Listening

·      Be present, not talking

·      Summarize for clarity

10/ Test for Accuracy

·      What’s going on

·      How are you impacted

11/ Step into Their Shoes

·      Consider what that must feel like

·      What could make the most difference now

David Fessell, MD is a contributor to HBR, JAMA, & Psych Today.

He speaks on gratitude, and other entities of psychological well-being and personal development.

David and I both come from careers in healthcare. He is a retired Radiologist, and I am most recently from the Leadership side of Clinical Operations.

We were both concerned about the wrath of the early pandemic and sought ways of helping those in the front lines, in leadership, and elsewhere of healthcare as covid came rushing on.

Research shows pain is quickly forgotten.

Though other circumstances around the pandemic and the burdens it placed on society carry forward for many people.

It is worth a reminder how we must keep ourselves emotionally nourished so that we may carry on productive lives and make greater contributions where we may focus.

David contributed to an HBR article along with Daniel Goleman - who is well known for his extensive work on Emotional Intelligence.

Without Emotional Intelligence and Social Awareness, we could slip into a mere transactional existence that could resemble a game of chess - with chess pieces moving independently lacking deeper connection and meaning.

Helping Maui & wildfires + disaster

I have been near and through a few large-scale disasters.

  • One at large scale was 9/11/2001 in NYC, when the Twin Towers were attacked, and fell. I was off work that day, my office was in the disaster zone. My home was not in the immediate disaster area. Timing and location matter greatly in disasters.

  • And once personally, while driving into spilled fuel from a gas tanker crash on a highway at night, to then experiencing that all ignite intensely. I lost a car, though I came out whole. Others met their fate, and large amounts of property were lost.

  • Consider me your Lucky Charm(?)!

I must clarify, this was without me personally losing a home, suffering vast personal damage, or losing loved ones any of those times. I was blessed.

  • From these firsthand experiences it has been heartwarming to see how organized some programs are to provide immediate and much needed disaster relief often at scale.

  • Ranging from FEMA, to Red Cross, to many faith based organizations, scores of people who experience great loss have been able to receive support from these generous groups.

I have spent the recent decade in California experiencing the impact of wildfires and their smoke - whether near me, or from other states and even other countries.

  • Northwest Canada is experiencing heavy forest fire activity now.

  • The USA is experiencing much of that wildfire smoke.

  • Wildfire smoke has no boundaries.

For those who were impacted by the recent Maui wildfire tragedy I wanted to offer a few vetted resources for anyone interested in donating to the relief and rebuilding efforts in Maui.

One big concern after any tragedy is how quickly many relief efforts can pop up, though some are without any real vetting process and without knowing exactly how your donations are handled or even kept if there is a rogue operation.

  • Disaster Fraud can be immense.

  • Please be sure you are contributing to vetted and worthy causes if you intend to help those who could benefit the most.
