Hello Friends,
Thank you for reading my newsletter “Leading Greats”!
This is where I bring reflections from my breadth of knowledge and experience in healthcare and leadership, incorporating well-being, plus new innovations.
I hope that you benefit from this information if even in some small way.
I appreciate your support!!
Thank YOU for being GREAT!
It has been another week of interesting conversations and discoveries - plus a retreat in Malibu, California over this weekend.
Malibu Retreat
Being on retreat in Malibu, California this weekend has me publishing the current issue of Leading Greats a day later than usually intended. I wanted to experience another day on retreat so that I could share more here for my reader audience.
I was up before 4 am this morning, and I headed out to sit in the garden on a cliff. The rewards were immense as I witnessed the dark turn to twilight, then to day light.
There is that precious time in the early morning that I prefer to be in natural light but prior to the sun peering out for the day.
As I now write I am sitting on a bluff overlooking Malibu beach in near distance as I compose this on early Sunday morning.
It is completely refreshing to see and hear the Pacific Ocean waves arrive, rip, tear, and crash ashore.
I am surrounded by treats for all the senses:
Mimosa trees with their ornate exotic blooms fragrance the air, combined with beds of fragrant Gardenias, sweet grass, and Eucalyptus tree sweet musk, all blended with the fresh ocean air.
What abundant treats and a big motivation to make this retreat.
There are seemingly endless natural treasures here on this property.
This has been a great pause for mind, body, and spirit!
Pepperdine University also in my view - hangs off an opposite cascade of beautiful Santa Monica Mountain slopes nearby.
I spent a bit of time over at the Pepperdine Graduate Business Center the other day. Another stunningly visual place with a purpose for leadership.
You can see more about the area here: https://bschool.pepperdine.edu/malibu/
Enjoy of few photos of the Malibu retreat property and surrounding landscape below.
It was a perfect setting and time well spent - sitting up on a knoll, sandwiched in a valley of the Santa Monica Mountains with the Malibu Creek passing nearby.
Have you walked a labyrinth?
The one below was on the retreat property, I walked it a few times, there are meditative benefits of walking a labyrinth.

Technology & Digital Detox
One advantage or disadvantage I had being in the Malibu hills this weekend is the variability of the - spotty cell service and Wi-Fi at times.
This had me go on a Digital Diet!
It was a bit uncomfortable at first then I accepted that was all part of the purpose of my retreat - to focus on other things for a few days.
I will have quite a bit to catch up on when I am home tonight - and I am looking forward to that.
There is so much to see and appreciate around us when we do not have our head focused on digital devices.
I highly recommend a Digital Detox occasionally!
Milestones
By not drinking alcohol for 4 years this July I have been pleasantly rewarded by some lifestyle choices I made in recent years.
I feel a greater sense of intention with more direct focus.
Quality of sleep is far better for me without drinking alcohol.
I eat better food, less of it, and in more desirable time frames that serve me better for energy and overall health.
Not that everything is so perfect - it is just how I am choosing to view and process things now that please me more with feelings of efficiency and enhanced satisfaction.
If you enjoy drinking alcohol regularly, perhaps you could benefit from a 30 day challenge of not consuming alcohol, and see if there are appreciable differences there.
The World Needs more Great Leaders
I spoke with Paul DeChant, MD a few times recently. We connected back in early pandemic days, and finally met in person last week.
Paul and I have several crossing paths in healthcare and leadership to include LEAN methodologies towards addressing systems improvements in healthcare.
Paul and I have had a few meaningful conversations around clinician burnout and the systems they work within, or have left. Paul co-wrote the book “Preventing Physician Burnout”.
While burnout and the different approaches to working with it are applicable to many professions and areas of responsibilities - both Paul and I are very experienced in healthcare and leadership, along with the intricate responsibilities that come with that work.
You can learn more about Paul here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pauldechantmd/
As a coach, I work with leaders and highly motivated professionals who are interested in leading with greater engagement, personal fulfillment, and well-being.
That is all - for this issue - of Leading Greats!
