I have seen that from both sides, first as a leader and later as a client.
For years, developing people was part of how I led. I coached the leaders on my teams through promotions, hard calls, and their first months in a bigger role.
Inside a company, your development has an owner, usually your manager. Review cycles and leadership programs keep it on the calendar.
When I left the corporate world, none of that came with me.
So I hired coaches of my own, several over the years.
Being the client taught me how much coaches differ. Each one brought a different strength, and none of them covered everything.
The right coach for one need was not always the right coach for the next. Matching the coach to the need in front of me made the investment worth it.
Both experiences shape how I coach and advise leaders today.
Leaving corporate leadership to coach on my own is part of the story behind my first book, Intervals Of Service. More on that below.
We say it is lonely at the top. Much of that comes down to who owns your growth.
At the senior level, your development belongs to you alone.
Many executives lean on one trusted voice for every kind of question. Often that voice is a mentor, and a good one.
A mentor advises from their own experience. That advice still has value, and it may fit the role you held years ago better than the one you hold now.
Choosing who helps you grow is a leadership decision. Give it the same care you give a senior hire.
This week, write down the one decision you are carrying alone. Then name who in your circle can see it from where you sit today.
If you are leading at a level where no one else owns your development, let's talk.
I have been there. I can help.
A quick update on my book: Intervals Of Service
Chip Conley featured Intervals Or Service in his recent blog. What an honor.
For anyone not familiar - Chip Conley, is a New York Times bestselling author and founder of Modern Elder Academy. I have been inspired by Chip for many years now!

The presale campaign closes in just a few days, and so far, five publishers have shown interest in my book.
Choosing among them comes down to fit, in a similar way choosing a coach does.
Running this campaign in public has stretched me as a first-time book author. The goal is publication and wide availability, with a publishing partner who can carry the book to more readers.
If you work in publishing, or know someone great who does, I would welcome an introduction if you see a fit.
Thank you to everyone who has encouraged this work and helped bring Intervals Of Service this far.
If the premise speaks to you, you can preorder before the campaign closes in just days.
The campaign lists five types of offers as ways to support Intervals Of Service and get involved. They vary in size and depth.
If you are interested in an offer you don't see, please reach out to discuss.
The sample chapters, advance praise, offers, and campaign details are here:
