September is where that difference shows up first.

"Hit the ground running" is the advice every return-to-work message repeats. The version that actually holds up is hit the ground deciding.

Skipping that step just moves the exhaustion into next week instead of removing it.

It's the first real workday since the holiday. Your inbox is full. Your calendar is already crowded. Everyone around you is already behind.

Somewhere over the long weekend, a plan formed without you noticing.

Catch up on everything by Wednesday. Answer every message before lunch. Prove the time off didn't cost the team anything.

Leaders who return well spend their first hour choosing what the month actually needs, before they open a single message.

Before touching the inbox, they name the one or two things that matter through the end of September, and they put it in writing before anyone has to ask.

That's not abstract this week. Twenty-two days are left in September. After that, one quarter remains in the year.

A team doesn't need more urgency today. It needs a leader who has already decided what those days are for.

This week, before your first meeting ends, cancel one recurring meeting that stopped earning its place months ago, and tell your team the one thing that matters most by Friday.
