Nobody could say what they are the person for.

Reorg season. HR asked each director's peers to write one sentence:

what do you call this person for?

Five answers came back for the same director.

✦ Project rescue.

✦ Culture work.

✦ Budget cleanup.

✦ Executive coverage.

✦ Whatever was on fire that week.

None of the five matched.

The director had a hand in all of it, which meant no one could name the one thing.

The director pulled up the internal bio first. Eleven bullet points, each one true, none of them a reason to call.

Cut it to one line: who to call when a project is already failing and needs a fix inside thirty days.

Sent it directly to the boss, three peers, and the team, not as an announcement.

Not every call changed overnight. But the next fire that got routed to them was the right one.

"You can do everything" bent honest: if you can do everything, you are not known for anything.

That is not versatility. It is the absence of an offer. Customers, peers, and leaders do not remember lists. They remember the one problem you are known to solve, and they call for that.

This week, write the one sentence you want said about you when your name comes up and no one asked you to defend it. Send it to the three people whose calls matter most.
