Early in my career, I over-prepared for every meeting that mattered.

I built the deck twice. Rehearsed the numbers until I could recite them backward. Walked in ready for every question I thought might come.

None of that was what people were reacting to.

I misread that for years.

I remember one meeting where a senior leader pushed back hard on a number I'd triple checked. My instinct was to defend it, pile on more data, more slides, another angle.

Instead I paused. Said the number was right, and asked what specifically concerned them.

The tension eased in that pause. I hadn't defended it further. I'd stopped performing certainty and stood in what I already knew.

Nobody explains this part when you're coming up. People aren't grading your material. They're reading whether you trust it.

I built my early approach around the wrong thing. Got the content right and left the harder part undone.

If you're still polishing the material and waiting for the presence to follow, it won't. That part gets built on purpose, with practice, not by accident.
