H1 closes today. The leaders who win H2 do this first:

The First Half of the year just closed. A lot of teams earned this finish line.

Say that before you say anything else.

This has been a difficult six months for many people.

Plans got compressed. Conditions shifted mid-execution.

Teams made hard calls with imperfect information and kept going anyway.

Some hit their numbers. Some came close. Some fell short through no failure of effort.

What they did between January and June deserves to be named before you open the H2 conversation.

The leaders I've watched earn their teams in moments like this do one thing first.

They get specific. Not "you all did great." Something particular, something that shows they were in it with their people, not just watching the scoreboard.

That takes two minutes. What it opens up takes the rest of the year.

Midyear planning is not where H2 begins.

The conversation that honors H1 is.

People will stretch further for a leader who saw what the first half actually required of them.

Your team knows whether you know it. That awareness shows up in how you open the H2 conversation, what you reference, what you don't gloss over.

Name what they did. Then tell them what you're asking them to do next.

That sequence is the difference between a team that commits and a team that complies.

This week, before any H2 planning session, tell one person on your team something specific they did in H1 that you will not forget.

Then ask them what they need to go again.
