Here’s How I Recognize Executive Presence in Under Five Minutes:
Most people watch the executive. I watch the people around them.
I was in a quarterly review a few years ago. The numbers had missed. The team walked in braced for a hard conversation.
The most senior person said almost nothing for the first twenty minutes. I watched the people around her instead.
One person challenged an assumption without checking whether it was safe to do so. Another took ownership of a miss before anyone assigned it. A third left with a next step she had defined herself.
Nobody was performing. Nobody was waiting.
That told me what I needed to know about that leader. Not from how she spoke. From what her people had become.
Executive presence is not what a leader projects. It is what the people around them have internalized.
The clearest signal I know is behavioral change in the team.
A manager stops escalating decisions that belong to them. An analyst starts saying the thing they would have held back six months ago. A new leader acts without waiting for constant validation.
None of that comes from a directive. It comes from sustained exposure to leadership that pushes judgment outward instead of pulling decisions inward.
When the people around you carry more ownership than they did a year ago, the leadership is working. When they do not, the constraint is closer to the source than most leaders want to admit.
Executive presence is not a trait on display. It is the residue of how others behave long after the meeting ends.
This week, in the next meeting you attend, stop watching the most senior leader.
Read the people around them instead.
