Leading Greats #163

You will not see it coming. You are still the one they are looking at:

Most weeks the arrangement stays quiet.

Then one comes that collects on everything you said you stood for.

A situation breaks before you have context.

Someone looks up, and the person they find is you.

Not a future version.

The one that showed up today.

What that kind of week exposes is not character.

Character was already there.

It exposes a different kind of readiness.

Not strategic. Not contingency-based.

The kind that accumulates in the hundred moments before the hard one.

The ones that did not seem to require full attention.

The ones most people moved through on half a tank.

The leader who holds when conditions deteriorate is rarely the one with the best plan.

It is the one who never stopped paying attention when coasting was an option.

That advantage is built in private.

No disruption can reach it.

No competitor can copy it.

Your challenge this week is simple and it will cost you something.

Find one conversation you would normally shortchange.

Give it your full attention before you know whether it deserves it.

You do not know what comes next.

Be all here anyway.

If your pace and your potential are not yet in the same conversation, let's talk.

How much time do you have left? I went to a cemetery on the weekend.

No funeral. No one I knew had recently been buried.

I was touched by history, and I looked up to find myself across from the grave of Frederick Hastings Rindge.

He did not just own land in Malibu, California. He controlled nearly all of it.

After purchasing more than 13,000 acres in 1892, later expanded to around 17,000 acres stretching roughly 20 miles along the coast, he turned the region into a private domain and intended to keep it that way.

He fought off railroad expansion. He resisted outside interests at every approach.

He even planned his own private railroad to block larger lines from using eminent domain against him.

He took legal and physical measures to restrict access, keeping Malibu isolated and largely undeveloped for the entirety of his lifetime.

His motivation was not ambition in the conventional sense.

It was preservation. Privacy. A fierce sense of personal vision for a place he loved.

When he died in 1905, that grip loosened gradually.

Outside forces eventually found their way in.

But if you have ever been to Malibu, you understand what his resistance produced.

That coastline, that character, that singular sense of place. This is largely how.

I call that Leading Greats in the finest sense.

I do not do what I do because I am motivated.

I do it because I can.

Your environment and your habits shape who you become.

Choose yours well.
