Attitude vs. Altitude: Leadership Truths at 11,000 Feet:
Welcome to Leading Greats, my Tuesday weekly newsletter.
Here I offer actionable leadership, business, and personal development insights and tools from my decades of experience as a learner, leader, and high-performance Executive Coach.
It’s been a priceless accumulation. I am pleased to share this with you.
There is a quote most leaders have heard.
Your attitude determines your altitude.
It sounds motivational. Until you are actually at elevation.
Recently I was hiking at 11,000+ feet in the Sierra Nevada.
Shoulder season. Spring. The trails were lush with alpine lakes and mostly snow covered but the morning started clear and the conditions felt right.
Three hours in, near the summit, everything shifted.
Snow moved in fast. Visibility dropped. The trail direction ahead became questionable.
I turned back.
Not because the goal changed.
Because the conditions did.
That decision took about twenty seconds.
Three hours of climb behind me and the summit still ahead.
But safety was the outcome that mattered most in that moment, and no elevation was worth compromising it.
Leaders face that moment more than they admit.
Deep into a strategy. A hire. A direction they committed to publicly.
And the conditions have shifted in ways the original plan never accounted for.
The ones who perform best are not the ones who push through regardless.
They are the ones who stay accountable to the best outcome as it actually stands, not as they originally imagined it.
That requires a specific kind of attitude.
Not optimism. Not confidence for its own sake.
Clarity. Steadiness. The willingness to lead what is actually in front of you.
Your attitude determines your altitude.
But only if it is honest enough to redirect effectively when the conditions tell you to.
What 11,000 feet taught me, more than the summit.
Redirecting is not retreating. It is accountable leadership.
Conditions change. The leader who reads them accurately outperforms the one who ignores them.
Safety in leadership is not always physical. It is knowing what you are protecting and why.

One reason I choose to live here I do is the dynamic geographic diversity that is available in close proximity around Los Angeles. I was recently up at Mt. Whitney, in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It’s the highest point in the contiguous 48 United States at 14,495 feet (4,418m).
At stark contrast, just 80 miles to the east is Badwater in Death Valley is the lowest place in the Western Hemisphere at 282 feet (86m) below sea level.
I took some stunning photos hiking at those alpine elevations. Nature does not need your permission. It just delivers.
I don’t do this because I am motivated - I do it because I can.
Your environment and habits shape you.
Choose yours well.
I drink AG1 daily(formerly Athletic Greens).
Spring clean your supplements - keep one.
Recently I’ve switched it up. I used to drink AG1 first thing in the mornings.
Now I enjoy it mid afternoon. I am less tempted by late day snacks.
AG1 is a Daily Nutrient Drink shown to support gut health and fill common nutrient gaps.
