Leading Greats #16
4th of July in retrospect - Lake Tahoe | Sustainability matters | Innovation: Opportunities & Mentors | Leadership - Solving big problems - takes from Alice in Wonderland
Hello Friends,
Thank you for reading my newsletter “Leading Greats”!
This is where I bring reflections from my wealth of knowledge and experience in healthcare and leadership incorporating well-being, plus new innovations.
I hope that you benefit from this information if even in some small way.
I appreciate your support!!
Thank YOU for being GREAT!
It has been another week of interesting conversations, discoveries - with questions about how we practice things that we do…
Fourth of July retrospective
The Fourth of July just days ago, is also known as Independence Day in America, a significant date in the history of this country.
It commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which declared the thirteen American colonies as a new nation, free from British rule.
There are various ways the Fourth of July holiday is celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout the United States, including patriotic displays, fireworks, parades, barbecues, plus other gatherings large and small. Some of these are calm and discrete. Some other events cannot be missed.
I noticed a good amount of firework sounds into the night after sunset on July 4th. Sometimes the sounds get very intense, they can be dramatic and continue for hours.
I am an early to bed and early to rise type person. I woke from sleep by fireworks a few times that night.
I quickly had to remind myself what the significance is of the opportunity for individuals in America to be able to have these privileges and displays.
Once this history is recognized, it is somewhat easier to accept these dramatic and at times lengthy dynamic sounds and sights.
Moving forward perhaps there are more advantageous ways of recognizing the celebration of Independence Day in America with less noise, less smoky air pollution from excessive fireworks, and less garbage left behind.
Sustainability efforts, keeping the environment in mind, and coming up with less impactful practices of gathering and celebrating come quickly to mind for many.
I have enjoyed my fair share of fireworks at Lake Tahoe, it is some experience!
This vast beautiful “Tahoe Blue” alpine lake, with breath taking views rests between two states, on the borders of California and Nevada.
Lake Tahoe is one commanding sight and feeling of 22 miles long x 12 miles wide at 6, 300 feet above sea level.
The surrounding mountains are another 3,000 feet higher.
I share a few “Tahoe” photos for you if you have not been. Some in winter, some in summer for a more full impact of the wonder.
These are simple shots on an iPhone. I do not claim to be a photographer, I capture experiences as memories.
Enjoy Lake Tahoe!!
There are significant environmental impacts on this Lake Tahoe ecosystem with particularly large events such as 4th of July celebrations.
On the shores of Lake Tahoe, some celebrating the Fourth of July left more than four tons of trash behind on several beaches this year.
Volunteers came on July 5th and cleaned up 8,559 pounds of litter that was left by celebrations on July 4th, 2023.
One beach alone had 6, 279 pounds of litter removed. A few of the items picked up included cigarette butts, beach toys, and plastic cups, along with chair, coolers, and toppled tents.
Some trash you do not immediately see as it goes underwater.
There is a popular sign/poster/bumper sticker here in California “Keep Tahoe Blue”.
It is a simple white background with the deep blue figure of the shape of Lake Tahoe at the center.
Once you have experienced Lake Tahoe, this truly has a significant feeling and message.
We could all do our part by keeping the conversation alive that while enjoying the rights that we have in America - accountability and responsibility are part of this also - in everything we do.
Let’s not forget our responsibilities as we enjoy our freedoms in America - while we have this!

Innovation and Mentors
I met Cory Warfield on LinkedIn a few months ago. We immediately hopped on a zoom call and bonded over many common interests.
Cory was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the time. I have spent plenty time there myself, so we quickly lost track of time with many things to discuss. Admittedly, I was longing to be back in Rio after our zoom exchange. Otherwise, Cory has roots in Chicago, IL.
I have been deeply drawn to technology for some time, and even more since covid came and altered our lives so drastically and forever.
Cory puts himself out there as a voice of experience in AI, web3, tech for good, ai automation, and more. These topics alone were plenty enough to lay the foundation for things I wanted to cover with Cory. So, we did just that, and so much more.
Cory and I had a deep dive conversation about healthcare. I have an in-depth background in healthcare, so we had plenty to discuss, though from different angles. Cory had some interesting ideas around healthcare coverage also.
Rapidly it became obvious that Cory is a connector of people. He generously has referred me to many people - and others to me. We are of the same heart when it comes to this.
I too enjoy connecting others where I see common interests or when I identify people who should know each other. I just introduce them as appropriate. Cory does this - we are kindred spirits that way, and in other ways.
Another thing that Cory is really interested in, passionate about, and informed on is Universal Basic Income = UBI. He was fast to offer history around this, stats, projections, comparisons, and cost vs. benefits of UBI and how to accomplish this.
I got quickly wrapped so interestingly into these concepts during our discussion. Cory is also excited about blockchain possibilities. These concepts interrelate as he sees it.
Rather quickly I understood how multifaceted Cory is by each turn in our conversation as he revealed again and again several entities he is involved with at leading levels.
Eco sustainability is a huge interest of mine, and you may have guessed it - Cory is also interested in this. He is approaching this from supporting innovative tech companies to scale in that direction.
Cory serves as mentor for some causes up to doing good. I learned quite a lot about how he helps others prepare to enter the metaverse space through a NO CODE, drag and drop platform.
My ears were all perked up by this time in our talk. I have gained a few broader perspectives from Cory Warfield.

The World needs More Great Leaders
While out for a routine walk in my neighborhood last evening, I encountered a white rabbit with red eyes around the the local Equestrian Club. https://www.menlocircusclub.com/equestrian
I snapped a quick photo of this special white rabbit, I share this with you.
This rabbit made me think of Alice in Wonderland.
Remember the white rabbit from that story?
The white rabbit plays a very significant part of the Alice in Wonderland story. I would like to review a few of those aspects as they play well into many of our current day life dynamics with applications for leadership, and self-leadership.
The white rabbit serves as the initial catalyst for Alice’s journey into Wonderland.
When Alice sees the rabbit hurriedly checking his pocket watch, she becomes curious and decides to follow him, leading her into a fantastical world filled with peculiar characters and events.
There are many symbols of time and urgency, and control over Wonderland. Anxiety over time is central with the White Rabbit in Wonderland.
Curiosity is awakened in Alice as the White Rabbit appears as an invitation into another world, so Alice follows along - leaving her ordinary world and entering a realm where the impossible becomes possible.
Not all is a charm, as the White Rabbit can be commanding as an authority figure. This leads Alice to question and challenge the absurdity of the rules she encounters.
With all of this challenge and anxiety - the need for well-being practices immediately came to mind, so that we may all have more resilience to appropriately question and better navigate the demands of doing really important work that is meaningful.
Well-being is a focus in my coaching practice with all clients, so they may be prepared to do their best work to better achieve bold important results.
I saw this white rabbit and reference to Alice in Wonderland as an invitation to look even further at how we can see and uncover so many needed solutions for what seem like an over-burden of challenges currently in our time - to include healthcare, climate emergencies, homelessness, inequities, and environmental concerns - to name a few most pressing needs.
My reference to Alice struck me as “she entered a realm where the impossible becomes possible.”
The World needs more Great Leaders!
