Your team is watching you more carefully than usual, and you are aware of it.

And the leaders who refuse to identify it are making the most expensive mistakes right now.
THE TERRAIN
AI is taking a powerful hold, rewriting job descriptions faster than organizations can respond.
Layoffs are not a correction cycle.
They are a structural shift in how companies value human contribution.
Leaders are being asked to guide people through losses they have not fully processed themselves.
The instinct is to perform certainty.
To frame every disruption as opportunity before your team has absorbed what just changed.
That instinct costs you more than it buys.
Your team does not need a leader without fear.
They need one who knows what to do with it.
Three Behaviors that separate leaders in extreme conditions right now.
Communicate before you have the full picture.
Silence reads as either incompetence or deception.
Share what you know, name what you don't, give a date when you'll return with more.
That sequence builds more trust than polished messaging delivered too late.
Protect your team's capacity to do meaningful work.
Scared organizations flood people with reactive tasks and shifting priorities. Good leaders absorb the chaos above them and give their teams enough stability to stay productive.
That protection is a strategic act, not a soft one.
Separate your identity from the outcome.
Leaders who fuse self-worth to results become dangerous in downturns.
They avoid hard calls because bad news feels like personal failure.
Stay curious about what the numbers are telling you instead of feeling threatened by them.
That weight you felt at the top of this? It was accurate.
The leaders who navigate this period well are not the ones who outrun the fear or reframe it into something more comfortable.
They are the ones who pick it up, look at it plainly, and make a decision about what to do next.
That is the job. Not the version from the books.
The one your team is watching you do right now.
They already know something is wrong.
What they need to know is whether you do too.
