If a goal matters, audit the power behind it now. Five Points decide progress or stalls:
Welcome to Leading Greats, my Tuesday weekly newsletter.
Here I offer actionable leadership, business, and personal development insights and tools from my decades of experience as a learner, leader, and high-performance coach.
It’s been a priceless accumulation. I am pleased to share this with you.
January does not decide outcomes in a single instant.
What it does provide is visibility. Patterns are already forming.
By mid-month, calendars are no longer theoretical.
Energy is being allocated. Tradeoffs are happening.
This is enough information to assess whether a goal is supported by real leverage.
Most goals do not collapse suddenly in February.
They thin out gradually as friction outpaces authority, skill, or support.
That is a power problem, not a motivation problem.
If a goal is important this year, pressure test it through
Five Forms of Power:
= Knowledge Power
This is about preparedness.
Do you have the skill, experience, and judgment this goal requires today.
Or does success depend on learning that has not yet been scheduled or sourced.
Learning in motion is normal.
Learning that is assumed but unsupported is where delays hide.
= Position Power
This is about control, not title.
Do you control the budget, decisions, talent access, or approvals tied to this goal.
If not, are those dependencies explicit and reliable.
Goals struggle when responsibility is assigned without authority.
No amount of effort fixes that mismatch.
= Task Power
This determines execution quality.
Do you control how the work is broken down, sequenced, and delivered.
Or are you dependent on processes and people you cannot redirect.
When task power is unclear, progress feels busy but slow.
Clear ownership restores traction.
= Personal Power
This is internal capacity.
Do your habits, communication, discipline, and emotional regulation support this goal.
Or does it require consistency you have not yet stabilized.
High standards demand stable behavior.
Intent does not replace repeatability.
= Relationship Power
This is influence through trust.
Is there someone whose backing, insight, or access materially affects success.
Have you invested in that relationship, or simply noted its importance.
Most goals stall here quietly.
Not from resistance, but from distance.

How to Use This Now
Do not audit everything.
Choose one goal that matters.
Strengthen weak power points.
Reduce scope where leverage is thin.
Increase pace where power is strong.
Progress compounds when goals are built on reality.
That is how progress holds through the year, not just through January.
