Leading Greats #144

What Modern Leaders are replaying as the year closes. It's not results:

Welcome to Leading Greats, my Tuesday weekly newsletter.

Here I offer actionable leadership, business, and personal development insights and tools from my decades of experience as a learner, leader, and high-performance coach.

It’s been a priceless accumulation. I am pleased to share this with you.

As the year closes, many leaders aren’t reviewing outcomes.

They already know how the numbers are looking.

They’re replaying how the work actually moved and flowed.

Where things advanced smoothly.

Where they slowed unexpectedly.

Where effort stayed high, but progress felt uneven.

This year made one thing clear.

Modern leadership is no longer about how much work gets produced. It’s about how well judgment stays connected to the work as tools accelerate it.

AI advances changed the pace quickly.

When leaders stayed close, it helped. Teams moved through first drafts faster. Prep time shortened.

People arrived at conversations more ready.

Work benefited when AI handled setup and humans handled decisions.

When leaders stepped back too far, pace suffered.

Work looked finished early, then came back for revision. Conversations drifted into wording instead of direction.

Teams produced more output but waited longer for clarity. AI moved fast. Judgment lagged.

The difference wasn’t skill.

It was involvement.

Modern leadership this year required knowing where AI belonged and where it didn’t.

Knowing when speed supported the work and when it covered uncertainty. Knowing which decisions still needed a human voice, clearly and on time.

You could see it in day-to-day work.

Teams moved ahead better when leaders closed decisions instead of reopening them.

When expectations were stated early. When people didn’t have to guess what was a draft, a suggestion, or the final word.

Where that didn’t happen, work pace slowed. Not because people resisted change, but because they weren’t sure how to proceed.

The leaders who adjusted didn’t just adopt more tools.

They clarified ownership.

They set boundaries around AI use.

They stayed present at decision points.

They reduced back-and-forth by deciding sooner, not asking for more.

People responded to that.

Not with excitement.

With steadier work. Fewer revisions. Cleaner handoffs. More confidence in what the next move would be.

As the year closes, what many modern leaders are replaying isn’t whether AI helped.

It’s where it helped because leadership stayed engaged, and where it slowed things down because leadership stepped away too soon.

That’s the real takeaway.

Modern leadership now means working alongside AI, owning the calls, and not leaving teams unclear.

When that balance is correct, the right work moves forward on your desired goals.

When it’s off, everything feels harder than it should.

That’s the line worth carrying into next year.
