You Won't Believe what I said to Influence a major deal:
I took several measured deep breaths.
People assume influence comes from what you say.
The truth is, real influence starts when you stop talking.
So at first. Nothing. I just listened.
In high-stakes conversations, presence often speaks above persuasion.
Like this:
I was in the room with a senior executive team, each pushing for their department's agenda.
Tension, opinions, egos.
Everyone wanted airtime.
I stayed still.
One breath. Then another.
Eyes focused. Ears open.
At first, someone looked at me as if to say, “Don’t you have a point of view?”
I did.
But timing it right mattered more than forcing it.
After nearly ten minutes of full silence and steady attention, someone across the table leaned in:
“You’re probably seeing what we’re all missing.”
I nodded. Then offered one sentence:
“It sounds like you’re aligned in what you don’t want - but unclear on what you do.”
Everything paused. That one line shifted the tone.
Because they felt heard before being redirected.
That’s the difference.
Influence doesn’t chase control. It holds space with discipline.
Here’s what deep listening does that persuasion can’t:
Disarms defensiveness.
When you don’t interrupt, people stop bracing for counterattacks.
Builds silent credibility.
The one who listens fully earns unseen trust.
Reveals what matters.
You hear not just what’s said, but how and why it’s said.
Gives you leverage.
The last to speak has the most context to speak wisely.
Try this in your next high-pressure conversation:
Breathe slower than usual.
Regulate yourself, not the room.
Watch for what's not being said.
Look for hesitations, overreactions, repetition.
Delay your point.
Let others spend their energy first.
When you do speak, go simple.
The shorter the sentence, the sharper the impact.
Leadership that listens is more powerful than leadership that performs.
It doesn’t need to fill the air.
It fills the gap others missed.
What you withhold often carries more weight than what you declare.
Let others be remembered for the rumble.
Be the one they remember for the shift.
