Why Story Works in Leadership
It humanizes
Your title fades. Your story stays.
It simplifies the complex
When explaining change or risk, stories show what spreadsheets can’t.
It anchors culture
Stories are how values travel through generations. Not manuals.
It scales influence
A good story, told once, gets repeated long after you're out of the room.
Example:
Instead of saying:
“We value resilience.”
Try this:
“Last year, one of our newer team members took a failing project and turned it around by doing something no one else thought to do - she asked the client directly what they needed now. She listened, adapted, and delivered. That’s what resilience looks like here.”
Now you’ve made resilience real.
What Great Leaders Do Differently:
They don’t just lead with logic.
They shape belief through narrative.
They don’t overload meetings with bullet points.
They wrap the point in a moment people remember.
Try This Exercise Today:
Think of a moment that changed how you lead - not just what you do.
Maybe it was a mentor’s challenge, a major failure, a surprising win.
Now, answer this:
→ What was the turning point?
→ What lesson emerged?
→ Who needs to hear it?
Don’t wait to polish it. Start sharing it with your team, your clients, your peers.
Let your leadership be felt, not just seen.
