Hello Friends,
Thank you for reading my newsletter - Leading Greats!
This is where I bring reflections from my wealth of knowledge and experience in healthcare and leadership incorporating well-being, plus new innovations.
I hope that you benefit from this information if even in some small way.
I appreciate your support!!
Thank YOU for being GREAT!
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
This is a great time to practice self-care for body, mind, and spirit.
This is also a great time to support others, and to gain support.
May has been an amazingly comfortable and beautiful spring here near me - San Francisco Bay Area, California.
It has been another week of interesting conversations, discoveries, and breakthroughs…
I was a guest on two podcasts this week - more to come on those as they are published.
Also, I have been asked to contribute to a magazine - which is always exciting when someone recognizes and values your views and your work!
AI and Healthcare
Forbes just recently reported on the need for AI to be regulated - and particularly in healthcare.
This remains to be seen what exactly that will look like as that is settled upon.
There are a few agreed upon areas of use for AI in healthcare:
Automation of patient inquiries, when deployed as a chatbot ChatGPT technology can automate clinicians replies to patients’ questions.
This information should be reviewed by clinicians before being released to the patients.
I am curious to see how this will become more work or less work for clinicians.
Healthcare Interpreter, offers real-time translation through ChatGPT to swiftly translate complex medical terminology into an understandable version easier for patients to comprehend their medical condition, recommendations, options, and in their native language.
Good news so far is we cannot replace humans in this evolution, as they are necessary for the regulation of accuracy and personal contact in healthcare.
One lingering concern is that ChatGPT is trained on existing data - this can incorporate bias and result in patient harm.
Data privacy and security remains one of the greatest concerns using ChatGPT in healthcare for potential data breaches and unauthorized access to sensitive patient information.
HIPAA does not cover AI and many rapidly emerging technologies.
We are in the Memorial Day weekend holiday 2023
Now that I live on the San Francisco Peninsula, I have frequented the Presidio Park where the San Francisco National Cemetery also lies in a beautiful setting overlooking Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and San Francisco Bay.
I took the photo below in the San Francisco National Cemetery inside the Presidio - where one foot of the massive Golden Gate Bridge also rests.
The air there is pleasantly scented from the many gigantic eucalyptus trees present.
If you visit San Francisco - be sure to spend time in The Presidio!
Beyond the holiday - I wanted to offer a bit of history on Memorial Day in the USA:
Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
Memorial Day 2023 will occur on Monday, May 29.
Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.
Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
I have visited Arlington National Cemetery outside of Washington D.C. in the past on Memorial Day.
It is startling to see the vast uniformity as this is the only cemetery that holds the bodies of service members from all previous US wars.

There I experienced the changing of the guards - and “Taps” played by bugle.
It was a somber experience.
The world needs more Great Leaders!
It is graduation season and I have heard some inspiring and entertaining words from well-known leaders from Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks, and Vice President Kamala Harris to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this year.
The 5 Core Ideas I see - speakers of impact - use are one or a combination of the following:1️⃣ Connection => they connect and make the message personal2️⃣ Narration => they tell stories that garner audience attention3️⃣ Explanation => they intrigue you by taking complexities and making them simple4️⃣ Persuasion => they invite you to challenge old beliefs through reason presented5️⃣ Revelation => they offer an Aha moment, inspiration for some - a lightbulb idea
Recently I have had truly engaging conversations with inspiring motivated leaders who are creating offerings to help others fill gaps that are needed in education, healthcare, technology adoption and much more.
One recurring theme I discuss is the Leadership Gap I notice.
We all are aware of the jobless claims and the financial sectors correcting, which rolls up to tech, healthcare, and many other initiatives - creating gaps.
One conversation that stood out for me was with a VP of a large healthcare concern - as they are in challenges to find suitable leadership candidates - to fill the void of various healthcare ranks.
Here is a great time to recognize burnout continues.
Leadership is not spared of burnout.
Remember always to practice self-care.
While leaders may not be at the front lines - they are dealing with many heavy issues that seem particularly daunting in more recent years.
The world needs more great leaders to help solve many of our timely pressing issues now.
