Leading Greats #2

Healthcare Startups | Innovation | Nutrition | Peak Performance

Hello friends,

Thank you again for reading my newsletter - Leading Greats!

This is where I bring reflections from my decades of knowledge and experience in healthcare and leadership incorporating well-being, plus new innovations, inspiration and best practices.

This has been another interesting week.

April moved right in on the calendar! The picture below is what my neighborhood is looking like now near Stanford University.

That also means it is the Second Quarter of 2023 for us.

Taxes are done, thankfully!

I spoke to a few more clinicians last week who are ramping up their businesses.

Which for them means working outside of the traditional clinical setting while offering something of benefit to the industry and fellow clinicians at scale.

This is exciting to learn and hear more about as I see their entrepreneurial journey progress.

We also discussed motivations and tools that got them to the point where they are now. From burnout and frustration - to getting coaching and inspiration, education, workshops, mentors - and aligning with some amazing complimentary partners for their business models.

Some are seeking VC funding. Now that is something to get excited about!

This takes a good amount of work - inner and outer work, plus willingness to be innovative for leaders.

Over recent months I have also been in conversation with some of the large healthcare provider systems in the USA on their innovative strategies.

Some of our conversations were focused on solutions for the frontline nursing shortage. This is where Virtual Nursing holds certain promise.

It is not news how the recent financial and banking ripples with great uncertainty quickly clouded initiatives for multitudes of businesses last month - for our public awareness anyway.

This has potential to stall a few courageous solutions in healthcare for some time to come.

One large Virtual Nursing launch has been placed on hold under budgetary watch until further notice. Company name(s) withheld for confidentiality purposes

The world needs more great leaders!

What is the future of Leadership?

I get to engage in this discussion often in my leadership coaching.

I am quick to speak to "what is leadership now?".

Time is not really on our side for so many pressing challenges that need a solution sooner rather than later.

Leaders do best for innovation by fostering innovation from everyone in their organization, down to the smallest unit, including individual relationships.

Subordinates and team members as a rule do not like speaking up when their information could be interpreted as negative whether it is intended as constructive or not.

When there is greater potential for everyone to contribute their thoughts, and what is in their hearts - the right thing to do becomes more apparent.

Then it comes down to what a leader values.

As a leader, over time surround yourself with people you value and respect who will be honest enough with you to provide the kind of constructive information you need - about you personally, and about the work you are doing, and the organization you are leading so that you may be effective.

Nutrition is vital for the brain and body - for everyone.

I am lucky that I like many of the foods that are healthy and beneficial to us.

Sadly, recently a few of my favorite foods made it onto the DIRTY DOZEN list of foods with the highest exposure to pesticides.

This could lead us to question is Organic Produce worth the extra effort and expense. I will not attempt to answer that here.

However, the advice from experts is that if you have the choice, the foods on the Dirty Dozen list are worth considering the source of with potential to limit excess pesticide exposure in your food.

I just read a good book:

The Art of Impossible, a Peak Performance Primer by Steven Kotler.

Steven is an award-winning author and peak performance expert.

In this book Steven unscrambles the secrets of elite performers  - from athletes, artists, scientists, CEOs and other great achievers - who have rewritten what we now view as possible.

The book was a great read and inspiration of how to get a greater lens on what is possible by stretching beyond our capacities and how to make bold impossible dreams more attainable.

I enjoyed reading this book, I referred back to several passages a few times.

That is all for this issue of Leading Greats!

I hope that you got something of benefit here.

Feel free to reach out to me and connect - with any questions, feedback, suggestions, etc. ! I am interested in keeping it great here!!

Ronnie
